Cookies notice

This notice lists every cookie and browser storage entry the Life and Homes website uses, and the outside services your browser contacts while you use it. It adds detail to our Privacy Policy.

Cookies and browser storage

A cookie is a small text file a website saves in your browser and sends back with later requests. Browser storage (local storage) keeps small values on your device and is not sent anywhere on its own. We list both below.

Cookies that sign-in needs

These are set only when you sign in, create an account or send a request through a form.

• csrftoken. Set by our server. It proves that a form submission really came from this site, which protects your account from cross-site request forgery. It lasts about a year.
• sessionid. Set by our server when you sign in. It keeps you signed in as you move between pages, cannot be read by scripts on the page, and expires after 24 hours.

Referral cookies

• _fprom_tid and _fprom_ref. Every page loads a script from FirstPromoter, the service that runs our referral program. When you arrive through a partner's referral link, it sets these cookies so the partner can be credited if you sign up. Our sign-up form reads them and sends the referral id with your new account. FirstPromoter receives your IP address and the address of the page its script runs on.

Saved in your browser

• lifeandhomes_user. A copy of your account details from your last sign-in, so the site can show that you are signed in right away. It is removed when you sign out.
• lifeandhomes_compare. The homes you picked to compare.
• lh-theme. Light or dark mode, saved once you choose one. Until then the site follows your device setting.
• mapState. The map position and zoom from your last search, so the map opens where you left it.
• locationPermissionDenied. Saved only if you decline to share your location, so the site does not ask again.
• mapbox.eventData. Saved by the Mapbox map library when a map loads. Mapbox uses it to count map loads.

Your location

If you sort search results by distance, your browser asks whether to share your location. The sorting happens in your browser, so your location is not sent to us and is not saved. If you have already allowed location for this site, the search page reads it without asking again so that distance sorting is ready.

Outside services your browser contacts

Each of these receives your IP address and basic browser details when your browser contacts it.

• Mapbox draws the maps on search and listing pages. Your browser loads map tiles from Mapbox, and the map library reports map loads back to it.
• FirstPromoter runs the referral program described above.
• Image hosts. Some photos on the homepage load from Unsplash, and images on the About page and the blog load from Sanity, the service we write that content in.

What we do not use

We do not use analytics cookies or advertising cookies, and we do not share your data with advertising networks. If we add an analytics service, we will update this notice.

Managing cookies and storage

• Your browser settings let you see and delete the cookies and site data this site has saved.
• Blocking csrftoken or sessionid stops sign-in and forms from working. Clearing browser storage resets your theme, your comparison list and the saved map position.
• Blocking FirstPromoter's cookies does not change how the site works, but a referral may not be credited.

Do Not Track

Some browsers send a Do Not Track signal. There is no agreed standard for how a site should respond to it, so this site works the same way whether or not it receives one.

Changes to this notice

We update this notice when what the site stores or loads changes. The date at the top shows the latest revision.
